The Periscope: Norfolk Broads National Park and Education Centre

Projects

A landmark to see and be seen inspired by the iconic wind-pumps of this water-dependent yet threatened landscape

The Periscope cuts a striking vertical silhouette against the horizon. Its floating pyramidal shape stratifies into three accommodation zones: the ground floor café and adjacent education space, open to the riverside; the first floor exhibition, audio-visual display and events space in the suspended tapering dark body of the building high-light the urgency of climate change and water management challenges; at its apex a hooded belvedere look-out offers visitors views over the Broads.

These three public spaces, accessible by lift and stair, are vertically linked by an architectonic periscope, which reflects a real-time image of the landscape from the belvedere down into the heart of the building for marvel and discussion.

The building has a sustainably sourced laminated timber structural frame, CLT panel enclosure, clad with dark-stained weather-boarding. It generates its own power from PV panels and local biomass boiler. The River Bure can flood freely under the platform of the ground floor, which, serviced from ceiling level, can itself suffer inundation under extreme conditions.

“… the Periscope building stood out as very strong conceptually, instantly catching the imagination … its textural and spatial quality clearly illustrated the exceptional architectural quality of the submission”

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
