A warm and welcoming environment for this dynamic north London Jewish community has been created from their previously cold (or hot) run down building. The Sanctuary keeps its 1960s feel but is transformed with a new roof lantern; where formerly a lower section of the ceiling cast a dividing shadow, light now unifies the space. Acoustic panels line the walls enhancing speech and music. A more generous Bimah and refurbished kitchen facilities make the spaces more inclusive. People are welcomed through a more prominent and generous entrance, while offices, community rooms, school rooms and WCs can now be used more flexibly. Finchley Progressive Synagogue 🡢

Natural tones and materials, birch ply, yellow Formica, cherry, refurbished and new sapele create a calm environment for the hustle and bustle of daily activity. Designed with Price & Myers 🡢 and Allwood Design and built with Philiam 🡢 the project included concrete repairs, asbestos removal, super insulation, windows, natural ventilation and a low temperature heating system run by air source heat pumps. Refurbished offices and classrooms create a calm atmosphere for young people with social, emotional and mental health challenges, autism and complex needs.
